Christmas Eve,Eve,Eve,Eve,Eve,Eve,Eve Party!

When we're in town, we always have our family Christmas get-together on Christmas Eve. Since we will be in Iowa this year for Christmas, we had our Christmas Eve with our Mesa family on Dec 18. I have to thank Tiffany for taking pictures. I've copied all of these pictures from her blog and I'm so thankful she documented the evening because I didn't get one picture! Thanks, Tiff.
We started with our traditional candelight dinner of ham, funeral potatoes, green bean casserole, red jello salad and Papa's rolls. Then we had ice cream roll for dessert. The kids all ate so well and were very well-behaved - I was very proud of them. We had Christmas music playing in the background and we could actually hear the music!
The kids were all excited to open their presents and could hardly wait! They wanted to open them right when they arrived, but we made them wait until after dinner.
Bryan and I are very excited because we got tickets to 'Wicked' from Ty & Tiff and some dinner gift cards and BJ and Shannon gave us a gift certificate to Amazon. Ty & Tiff's girls gave me Tootsie Rolls (they give me these every year and I LOVE them!)
After dinner, we played Christmas carols with our chimes, another fun activity we enjoy on Christmas Eve. The kids are getting really good at it and we could actually identify which song we were playing!
I love traditions! I am so thankful to have family close by to share these special times with. I wish Holly and Michael and families lived closer so we could all get together more often, but I take what I can get and am thankful for it. Now we're looking forward to going to Iowa to have another Christmas - this time with Holly, Jeff, Claire and Ethan. I'll post about that when we get home.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Happy Birthday, Sadie

This year I have done a post for everybody in our family on or near their birthday. And last, but certainly not least, is Sadie! Her birthday is actually Dec 27, but since it is just after Christmas and a lot of people will be gone (including us), Tiffany had her birthday party on Dec 16. It was a Hello Kitty party and she had a lot of cute friends come to her party. Here is a picture of Sadie with her Hello Kitty ice cream cake.
Sadie is so sweet and tenderhearted. She has been going to all day pre-kindergarten this year and is doing great. She will definitely be ready for kindergarten next fall! Sadie loves Hello Kitty, she loves purses and putting things inside purses, she loves our "Where's Waldo" book and loves to have stories read to her. We gave her a camoflauge skirt and a shirt to match for her birthday because she loves anything camo so she can be like her dad. She also played soccer this year and we were able to go see many of her games.
We are so thankful to have Sadie in our family and we love her very much.
Happy 5th Birthday, Sadie! We hope you have a very special day on your real birthday next week.

Violin Recital

Kylie had her first violin recital on Friday. I'm so happy we were able to go see Kylie perform. She is in the 4th Grade orchestra and I was actually quite impressed that they were all on the same note and it sounded great. We're so proud of Kylie for playing the violin and piano and we hope she keeps it up for many years!

Happy Birthday, Tiff

Happy Birthday, Tiffany. I searched and searched for a picture of Tiff alone and couldn't find one. But I thought this one with the girls was very cute. Tiff is a super mom and has more energy than anyone I know. She goes to the gym a fews times each day, teaches pre-school, is involved in many other things and is a great mom to the girls and wonderful and patient wife to Tyler. She is also very helpful ALL the time! We love you, Tiff, and hope you've had a wonderful day.

Washington DC

I had my annual trip to Washington D.C. for a work conference. I was in charge of registration and whatever else they needed help with. Including travel, I worked a total of 71 hours last week and I'm exhausted. The conference turned out great, although our numbers were a little low compared to other years due to the economy. I stayed at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City. This is what my room looked like.

Besides all the hours I worked, I was able to manage a little fun time. First of all, on Sunday evening, my nephew Scott picked me up at the hotel and took me to his house. He and his friend, Jenny, had prepared a wonderful meal for me and it tasted so good after a long day of travel.

Tuesday Evening was the Conference opening reception. We took a bus from our hotel to downtown Washington DC, where we went on an Odyssey boat cruise around the Potomac. Unfortunately, we weren't able to go as far as we wanted due to high tide (we wouldn't have been able to make it back under the bridge because the tide was so high), so we just floated around in a circle for a couple of hours. Here is a picture of the boat from their website. It was too dark to get good pictures, but it looked very cool at night with all the lights around. The inside of the boat had Christmas decorations and looked very festive.
On Thursday evening, my co-worker Stephanie Hamill and I took a cab to the White House to see the National Christmas Tree. The cab dropped us off a little ways from the Washington Monument and this picture was taken as we were walking towards it.
As we started walking toward the White House, we heard a lot of sirens and saw a lot of police activity in that direction and wondered what was going on. Little did we know that it was the night of the tree lighting ceremony and we missed seeing President Obama and his family lighting the tree by 20 minutes. Most of the people had gone by the time we got there, so that was one good thing about it. The national tree actually wasn't that impressive - it isn't that tall and was very fat in the middle.
It was cute that they had trains and villages all around the tree. I thought about my grandson, Sam, when I saw this and know he would have loved it!
Around the center area where the National Christmas Tree stood, was a small Christmas Tree decorated by somebody from each different state. Here is Arizona's:
The Christmas trees were behind the White House, so after we were done, we walked around to the front of the White House. It looked very beautiful and peaceful.
We walked down the street a bit and saw a lot of Occupy Wallstreet protesters at the 'W' Hotel, near the White House. The police were patrolling them very carefully, but they seemed pretty peaceful. I would hate it if I were the 'W' Hotel though - the poor guests who had to go in and out of the doors! We walked a little further down the street and found McCormick & Schmick's on 13th Street in Washington DC, so we stopped to eat dinner there. It was delicious and very expensive, but our company was paying for it!
We called the cab driver who took us downtown to see if he would pick us up and then we started walking back to where he dropped us off. We never did hear from him, so we took the Metro back to our hotel. Stephanie was afraid to ride the Metro, but she did it and I took this picture of her getting on the Metro to prove to her family that she had done it! Yay for Steph!
It was a great trip and I look forward to these Conferences every year - even though they are a ton of work!

Happy Birthday, Michael

Happy Birthday to Michael! I was out of town on his actual birthday, so I'm a little late posting this.

Michael has always been a very obedient, helpful and loving son. He became the go-to person because he was always so willing to help with anything without complaints. There was a 5 year gap between he and Holly, his next oldest sibling. So when the three other kids were all at school, Michael was my little buddy and we went everywhere together. I was very sad when he started school. He was my dog walking partner and we had some good chats as we walked. Later on, when all of the other kids left home, Michael was, again, my little buddy and it was a VERY sad day when he went off to college because that meant there would be no more kids at home with us. That was one of the reasons I was anxious to move to Arizona. I couldn't stand the thought of having none of my kids around me.

Michael is a super dad to his little Madie. When she was first born, he was her primary care giver because Mallory still had a lot of classes to finish up in order to graduate the same day Michael did - and she had to do her student teaching. I'm so thankful for the person Michael always has been and for who he is today. We love you, Michael, and hope you had a wonderful birthday!
